A slide show of exquisite and beautiful palm trees today. I love taking photos of them and I have always loved drawing them. So here are a few photos to appreciate their form and beauty. There are over 2600 species of palm tree. Some (and I can vouch for this in Oregon) are also bred to survive colder climates and even winter. Although many species produce dates, they are mostly inedible and only one species, phoenix dactylifera, actually produce the dates we see sold today. Dates have been cultivated for over 5000 years.
Fun Fact: Some species can grow as tall as a hundred feet. But they come in all kinds of height, leaf or frond size and trunk characteristics. Some have a smooth trunk, some are quite thick.
