This is Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses near Kinver, Staffordshire. These unusual sandstone houses were built into the side of a ridge known as Holy Austin Rock. Why are they there? Nobody really knows, but they are thought to have their origins as long ago as 600 or 700 AD. Now they belong to the National Trust and you can see them as they would have been lived in in the mid 20th century. The last people to live there moved out in the 1960s.
Fun Fact:Β There is a possibility that these rock houses were the inspiration for Tolkein’s Hobbit.
